Abstract
This report is intended to describe a summary of the literature survey and the research
into environmental health and the application of sensors for environmental sensing on a
mobile platform to assist personal health. It will cover also the design and
implementation of a low cost prototype to integrate environmental information on
mobile platforms using sensors, and the subsequent visualization tool for the PC to
study the information gathered. This report summarises the theory work and topics
carried on as a part of the development of the prototype including: sensing,
implementing RS232 and analogue to digital conversion on a PIC microcontroller,
interfacing with a PDA, implementing the Graphical User Interface for the PDA and the
GUI for the PC, both in Visual Basic, and usability testing of the device. The prototype
device comply with the following specifications:
• Measures some environmental parameters
• Logs and transmits the information to a PDA
• Stores the data for later revision on a PC tool
•
Intuitive GUI with personal alerts
• Reliable during normal operation
• Built-in usability test
