Bilingual ekphrastic tanka (5-7-5-7-7 syllables)
Más é seo an uair dom go deimhin chun mo lóchrannsa a ardú,
ní hí mo lasairse a dhófaidh ann.
If this indeed be the hour in which I lift up my lantern,
it is not my flame that shall burn therein.

Artwork in The Lantern / An Lóchrann is mainly in Public Domain or in the Fair Use
category, i.e. an image widely available on the Internet (Wikmedia Commons etc) and
used in this free book for non-commercial purposes. For the most part, the bilingual tanka
in this series were written as spontaneous responses to works of art. Some of these tanka
were first published in Culture Matters (UK), and Briefly Write; some English-language
versions appeared in Modern Literature (Chennai, India).
