presents Informal lunchtime talks by Human Rights academics, practitioners, and students Tuesday 25 October 1:00-2:00 pm Room 425, KK Leung Building Disappearances and the Rule of Law in Sri Lanka Sanjeewa Liyanage Programme Coordinator, Asian Human Rights Commission Mr Liyanage will introduce the problems of enforced disappearances and rule of law in Sri Lanka, examine how the issue was brought back into the international discussion and the UN, and assess the implications of the new UN treaty against forced disappearances. He will also explain what the state has done so far, and present the situation of the victims and their family members. He will finish by looking at what needs to be done locally and internationally. Sanjeewa Liyanage, a Sri Lankan, obtained his Masters of Law (LLM) (Human Rights) at the University of Hong Kong. He was involved in the student movement from about 1984, and in 1988 he became the Asian coordinator of an international Catholic student body and has traveled extensively in Asia. In 1995 he joined the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC). He has represented the Asian Legal Resource Centre (ALRC), the sister organization of the AHRC, at many UN forums, including the Commission on Human Rights, lobbying against disappearances in Sri Lanka and preparatory meetings leading to the World Conference Against Racism. Sanjeewa Liyanage is presently a programme coordinator at the AHRC and ALRC.
