Page 2 DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING Greetings from the Chair The Spectrum MBA managerial accounting class visited the Smurfit-Stone Company, an Irvine manufacturing firm, to see how the manufacturing function is carried out. Smurfit-Stone manufacturers boxes for major companies including Kimberly Clark. Pictured to the right are members of the class, listening to Christy Lindsey, one of the students who works in the accounting department for Smurfit-Stone and served as the hostess for the tour. After a discussion of the types of boxes and customers, the class went on a tour of the plant to gain an understanding of how costs are accumulated for a job-order cost system. After the tour, the students were honored by having the Controller, Cheryl Kennard, discuss with them various issues of accounting for manufacturing costs. It is always a pleasure to be able to tell you of the accomplishments and ambitions of the CSUF Department of Accounting. In June, we graduated 325 undergraduate and 25 graduate students. This Fall our enrollment is up substantially over Fall 2004, and we have added two new tenure-track faculty to our department. The enrollment in our program at the CSUF Irvine campus undergraduate program continues to grow, and we are offering more of our electives on that campus. Our graduate programs are experiencing strong growth, especially our Masters of Science in Taxation, both on the main campus and the Spectrum campus. New courses being proposed include a 15-unit class to be offered in the summer to non-business/non-accounting undergraduates so they are able to complete an accounting Master’s program more quickly and sit for the CPA exam. With the demand for our students at an all-time high, it is certainly a good time to be a member of the Department of Accounting at CSUF. Betty Chavis The Center for Corporate Reporting & Governance will be hosting its fifth semiannual conference on Monday, September 19, 2005. Keynote speakers at the “SEC Financial Reporting Conference” include Scott Taub, Deputy Chief Accountant at the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), Katherine Schipper, Member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and Greg Fletcher, Assistant Chief Auditor at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), who will be speaking about updates and current projects at their respective agencies. The day will conclude with a luncheon address by Marc Blythe, a partner with Ernst & Young, and a panel on the revised accounting rules regarding stock-based compensation. Panelists include Cindy Alexander, Assistant Chief Economist at the SEC, Jonathan Glover, Professor of Accounting at Carnegie Mellon University and former SEC Academic Fellow, and Seth Rosen, a principal-in-charge of KPMG’s compensation and benefits practice area. Following the conference, the CCRG will be hosting the Haskell & White Corporate Governance Seminar, in which academic researchers in accounting, economics and finance from universities across the country were able to present their research. Accounting professionals in attendance will be able to earn up to six CPE hours. The Center’s last conference, “Section 404 Compliance,” held on Friday, April 29, 2005 at the Irvine Marriott drew over 225 attendees. The SEC and PCAOB speakers spoke about internal control audit filings received so far under Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and continued discussion at the regulatory agencies about how to offer guidance on meeting the new requirements. A panel of experts offered various perspectives on 404 and offered advice to smaller companies still working on their own compliance efforts. Further information about the CCRG, including videos from the April 2005 conference and PowerPoint slides from previous events, is available at our website: http:// business.fullerton.edu/centers/ccrg.
