In 1983 he graduated from Brown University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in
neurosciences. He then went on to read for his Doctor of Medicine degree at Johns Hopkins Medical
School and completed his psychiatry residency at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in 1987.
During his time as a medical student, he
developed his aptitude for writing by
working as a reporter for Newsweek and
a freelancer for the Washington Post,
Baltimore Sun, and USA Today.
Apart from his time as medical director of the Tri-City Mental Health
Centers and Heritage Health Systems he also served as Associate
Medical Director of Boston Regional Medical Center.
