2 (ERC-2006/WS/5) 3 Foreword Development, if it is to be successful and sustainable, must be people-centred. Since its inception, UNESCO is contributing to such endogenous development by helping develop the talents and skills of students and researchers whose ingenuity and capacity for innovation have allowed advances and breakthroughs in all the fields of competence of the Organization. UNESCO’s Fellowships Programme has up to date enabled 50,000 fellows from around the world to study in different countries, thereby forging strong intellectual and scientific links among peoples, and contributing to international cooperation and understanding. The programme facilitates the transfer and genuine sharing of knowledge and expertise in which each party, be it teacher or student, gives and learns. The Directory of UNESCO Fellows lists fellowships awarded by the Fellowships Programme Section in the 2004-2005 period within the framework of both Regular and Extra-budgetary Programmes. It reflects UNESCO’s continuing commitment to the development of human capacities and international cooperation. It also testifies to the generous support this programme has received in the biennium. Convinced that a strategy of alliance building is essential to attaining the development goals, we welcome your ideas, active partnership and co-operation in making the UNESCO Fellowships Programme successful. For each fellowship, information is provided on: the name and the position of the fellow at the time of the award, field of study, programme according to the sources of financing, country or countries of study or visit. The diagrams in the following pages indicate the total number of fellowships awarded to men and women by region, by Programme Sector and by source of financing. The Annexes provide lists of abbreviations used in the Directory for denoting countries of study, programmes and sources of financing, etc. Lastly, it should be pointed out that this Directory contains only fellowships administered by the Fellowships Section, Division of Relations with Organizations and New Partnerships, Sector for External Relations and Cooperation. Those administered by Programme Sectors at Headquarters as well as UNESCO’s Regional Offices do not appear in this Directory, but an overview of these is given in the 34 C/3 Report of the Director-General on the Activities of the Organization (2004-2005). 17 Introduction Analogue aux précédents, ce Répertoire préparé par la Section du programme de bourses dresse la liste des bourses attribuées par la Section en 2004 et 2005 dans les cinq régions : Afrique, Amérique latine et les Caraïbes, Asie et Pacifique, Etats arabes, Europe et Amérique du Nord.
