About Joe Libby

Introduction
A few years ago, I came across a YouTube video of David 
Copperfield performing a close-up trick on CNN. As a boy, he had 
purchased it from a magic pitchman named Danny Tsukalas
(pronounced “Chick-lis”).
I was blown away by what I saw. It was a simple-looking trick, but 
in David’s hands, it was a miracle.

(I think it’s kind of funny that David says he just did “OK.” It 
looked great to me. But just imagine how good that trick looked 
when Danny did it over and over again at his stand at Macy’s.)
Sometime later, I was able to get the prop, and after working with it 
for a while, my mind began to explode with ideas. Some of the 
ideas were wacky, to be sure. (It’s the way my mind works.) But I 
realized that there were lots of possibilities with this little wooden 
coaster.
In order to do the effects in this ebook, you will need at least one 
panel board magic trick. It’s also sometimes called the “miracle 
board” or the “coin board.” Maybe you have one lying around in a 
drawer that you never got around to using.

package that includes the panel board and an online video 
tutorial/documentary that goes into tremendous detail about the 
history of the board and different techniques with it. 
You can purchase the traditional checkerboard-pattern board, which 
will work with pennies and dimes. At the time of this writing, he

that looks like a fancy wood coaster; it can use coins up to the size 
of a U.S. quarter. I have one of each; I have to handle each one a 
little differently, but they both work well.

Chapter 1: Basics
Let’s get started with some basics about the panel board.
In case you don’t have one yet, the secret to the board is that there is 
a trapdoor in the center that is operated by your index and middle 
fingers. There is also a slot into which the coin slides and can 
remain hidden.
When you first get the board, the trapdoor may be really stiff. You
simply need to work it a bit so that it loosens up and is easier to 
operate. Just keep working it, opening and closing the trapdoor until 
you are satisfied that it’s loose enough for you to operate easily. 
Danny Tsukalas liked for the trapdoor to be very loose on the 
boards that he would use for demonstrations. But you can make it as 
loose as you are comfortable with.
The trick is very easy to do; it will just take some practice to get the 
knack for the board and to find the way to handle it that is 
comfortable for you.
The board with the checkerboard 
pattern is lightweight and very easy to 
handle. It’s designed for use with 
pennies, dimes, and similar-sized coins. 
I discovered that it can also take a 
nickel, which will probably take some 
additional practice to handle smoothly.
But it may be worth the trouble since it 
will be easier to see from a short 
distance.

The modern-looking board (originally 
marketed by Dave Haversat as The Miracle
Board) can be used with coins up to the size 
of a quarter. I understand that there are some 
boards out there that can work with a half 
dollar, but I haven’t seen any of those.
The basic vanish of the coin works this way: 
1. Place a coin on the trapdoor.
2. Make sure your index finger and middle finger are underneath 
the trapdoor.
3. Pretend to pick up the coin. As you do, use your fingers to 
block the coin from the audience’s view.
4. Use your index finger under the trapdoor to open the trap.
You’ll probably have to tilt the board toward you a little, but the 
coin should slide right into the slot. Use your middle finger to close 
the trapdoor as you mime picking up the coin with your other hand.

5. Now you can complete the vanish of the coin however you 
like. You can vanish it by tossing it in the air. You can rub it 
between your fingers to make it vanish.
6. The basic way to make the coin reappear is to cover the board 
with your hand, leaving the trapdoor clear. Tilt the board away from 
your body slightly, and at the same time open the trapdoor. Let the 
coin slide out but use your hand covering the board to catch it so it 
doesn’t slide off. Reveal that the coin has reappeared.

It will take some practice to perform with the board smoothly. But
