SLOUGH, England--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Expand Networks, www.expand.com, the leader in
optimizing WANs for branch office consolidation and virtualization, together with the leading global communications
provider, SeaMobile Europe, have been jointly honored at the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2010,
winning the prestigious prize for Satellite Service Innovation.
SeaMobile and Expand Networks’ winning project successfully advanced satellite services for the global relief
agency, Tearfund, to ensure resilient communications across its global network of aid teams.
The collaboration on the Tearfund project beat off hundreds of nominations for the industry’s most innovative
projects that were received from the readers of Global Telecoms Business in 2010. Adam Davison, corporate VP of
sales and marketing at Expand Networks explains the project:
“Operating in areas where fixed infrastructure is simply not available, Satellite links provided by SeaMobile are
imperative to the work that Tearfund carries out. However, Satellite links are notoriously low on bandwidth and high
on latency, and this meant employees located in remote locations had limited access to critical data and applications.
Our challenge, together with Tearfund’s value-added technology partner, Nettitude, was to compress and accelerate
all traffic over the satellite network to make sure it was delivered into the hands of the employees who needed it,
when they needed it.”
By applying a combination of optimization techniques such as compression, QoS and byte-level caching, the
completed project gave Tearfund the equivalent throughput of 2Mgs across a 300Kbps satellite connection,
ultimately improving communications between its
