Songsri Ketsing and Indrasak Tiamsawet gives the sandstone Buddha image to Mahidol Univeristy, located in front of Baan Intanin (Dorm 3-4). The Buddha image, which has the lap width of 1.30 meter and the height of 1.85 meter, is soon become the center for all Buddhist related activities for students and staff. The covered pavilion (Sala) was built later on a Buddha’s major renovation in 2003. The Master Plan of Salaya Campus The master plan is used as a guideline to develop physical structure of the Salaya Campus. The master plan has the concept that reflects the president’s determination to make Salaya Campus becomes “A promised place to live and learn with nature,” and able to create graduates with the highest quality in both academically and mentally. Post Office, located at the first floor of Science 3-4 Building 3 Somdej Phra Rajabida Court The Somdej Phra Rajabida court covers the area of 4.6 rai (1.8 acre), connecting to Chaofaa Garden where the monument of H.R.H Prince Mahidol of Songkla is located. The court will serve outdoor activities and ceremonies such as new student induction, student’s re-birth, which will create pride and admiration for the students to Mahidol University. The project is under construction and expects its comple- tion in 2011. 2 Organic Fertilizer Project After the improvement of university’s waste management system, a standard and hygienic garbage disposal stations are established to accumulate high amount of waste. The stations facilitate all agencies in the university as a place to compile disposal garbage for local government to collect. Four stations have been built all over the campus. The amount of organic garbage and tree wastes are separated to be resources for producing organic fertilizer, which uses low-cost anaerobic degradation anaerobic process. The obtained organic fertilizer is used for tree maintenance on the campus while the rest can be put up for sale. 4 Mahidol Learning Center Mahidol Learning Center is a 4-floor building with a total floor area of 36,322 m2. When it is completed, it will be served as a learning center, activities, and service facilities for students, staffs and visitors. The tropical architecture building, connected to Chaofaa Garden, contains H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla Biography Hall, Mahidol University Hall of Fame, Prince Mahidol Court, Center for Innovation Learning, Cafeteria, and service areas. The construction began in October 2009, and expects its completion in 2011. 5 Cultural Anthropology Museum Cultural Anthropology Museum presents a new concept of learning in the topics of geography, civilization, and public health, which is the first of its kind in Thailand. The museum offers body of knowledge and different activities with considering social service as its priority. The museum presents the comprehensive knowledge of South East Asia, which makes this region plays an important role on the global economy. In addition, the biological diversity results in the rich culture, which was passed down from generation to generation. The museum opens Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the first floor of the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia. 21 South East Asian Music Museum South East Asian Music Museum is a 7,000 m2 building, located on a 5-rai (2-acre) pond. The building will provide a place to gather a collection of Thai and South East Asian musical instruments and a stage to perform, record and store their musical sounds. It will also be used as the venue to learn about roles of music regarding social context and the nation’s history related to music. The museum is currently under construction since 2009 and will be completed in 2011. 23 MU Corner MU Corner is a group of 6 buildings on the area of 2 rai (0.8 acre) with a Thai modern architecture, which offers continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces to save energy and be close to the nature. MU corner will be a place to offer academic and research works, innovation and university products and health care services to the adjacent community. It will be a learning space between university and community through a cultural court and an exhibition hall. The construction will be complete in December 2009. 24 Office of the President The Office of the President is a 5-floor building, with a total floor area of 24,106 m2. The building houses all divisions in the Office of the President and the Office of Mahidol University Council, two 544-seat lecture halls, computer cluster, One-Stop Service, university gift shop - The Harmony by MU, and meeting rooms. In the main hall is the statue of H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who is regarded as the father of modern medicine and public health of Thailand. 7 Garbage Recycle Bank Garbage Recycle Bank aims for envi- ronmental conservation and reducing amount of waste, which is a burden of community and society and the main cause of global warming. The solid waste separation campaign not only makes the best out of waste, but also generates extra income for students, staff and vendors in the university by consigning recycle waste at garbage recycle bank located at Environmental Conservation Building. The garbage recycle bank will issue the passbook and value from cost of garbage. The depositor can withdraw cash directly or leave it in saving account to withdraw later. 6 Golden Jubilee Medical Center and Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Dental Hospital Golden Jubilee Medical Center and Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Dental Hospital is another medical and dental institute of Mahidol University. It was established to celebrate the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 50 Years Accession to the Throne. The medical center specializes in dental service, medical treatment and rehabilitation, and elderly patient care. In addition, it is advanced medical education institution for offering on the job training to residencies, nurses and intern dentists. The compound includes hospital (medical center) building, in-patient building, and service building on the area of 78.6 rai (31.4 acre) In the year 1996, His Majesty the King kindly named the building as Golden Jubilee Medical Center. Later in the year 2008, H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn kindly named the dental hospital as Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Dental Hospital. 8 Sport Zone Today, the university sport zone is combined with outdoor sport field, which are football field 1 with 2,000 seats stand and 8 synthetic running tracks, football field 2, football field 3, a rugby field, 12 tennis courts, one beach volleyball field, one Hoop Takraw field, 32 Petanque fields, and swimming pools within College of Sports Science and Technoogy. In addition, there 3 indoor sport fields: Multi-Functional Building contains volleyball or basketball courts with audience stands which can accommo- date 2,500 seats; Badminton Building contains 9 badminton courts; and SS. Sport Center locates within College of Sports Science and Technology where fitness, sauna and aerobic rooms are available. 10 11 Welcome Plaza Welcome Plaza is the welcome area in front of the Office of the President, which greets visitors coming from Phutthamonthon Sai 4 Road. The land- scape includes the main entrance presenting university name and philoso- phy, a row of large trees on the natural earth wall to separate busy road on the outside and the university, creating the sense of warm hospitality to visitors. The large walkway encourages uses of pedestrians and bicycles, which are friendly to the environment. MU Health MU Health is the university’s health center located at Baan Leelawadee. It offers basic health examination and treatment to students at no cost. A physician attends from 12 a.m.- 1 p.m. and 2-3 p.m., and a nurse attends from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m, Monday to Friday. On-duty dorm staff is available to assist at off hours for basic medicine inquiry and emergency transfer. 12 MU Home The group of student dormitories was given a new name “Baan Mahidol.” Each dormitory is named by flowers: Baan Bhud- dharaksa for Dorm 1 and 2, Baan Intanin for Dorm 3 and 4, Baan Chaiyapruek for Dorm 6-7, Baan Kanpai Mahidol for Dorm 8-9, Baan Leelawadee for Dorm 10, and Baan Sritang for Dorm 11. Baan Mahidol provides accommodations for approximate 4,000 students. The students will be under supervision of faculty members and staffs, who concern not only place to live, but also care and love for all students as family members. Students will be established the university core value, and good memory while living at Mahidol University. 13 14 Condominiums The condominiums are 3 reinforced- concrete buildings. Each building has 14 floors, provide over 550 monthly- leased rooms in single, double, and suite types for university students and staffs. Suite rooms offer 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and living room with neces- sary furniture including beds, air condi- tions, closets, tables, chairs, a refrigera- tor, and a telephone. 15 Thai House Mahidol Thai house consists of a complex 5 traditional Thai-style houses. There are connection porches and a riverside pavilion building in traditional central Thai style. A natural grove of “Sa-Kae-Tung Trees” is maintained next to the Thai house, where local birds and wild fowls fly over head far from the urban chaos. The Thai house is managed by the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia. It is open for everyone to visit and relax. 16 Musica Arboretum Musica Arboretum is a museum of over 1,500 living trees used in making musical instruments, located on 5-rai (2-acre) area next to College of Music. In the area, there are three marble sculptures, carved by sculptors from Italy. The first one is a sculpture of Pra Jenduriyanga's Cello. (Pra Jenduriyanga is the man known as the father of western music in Thailand) The second one is a sculpture of a saxophone and His Majesty the King's Composition. The last one is a lady, who has passion in classical music with her three favorite dogs, listening to music. The arboretum will become a music venue, learning place for children, and important cultural area of the university. 17 Sireerukachart Botanical Garden Sireerukachart Botanical Garden was established in 1981 on the area of 31 rai (12.4 acre). The garden contains approximately 1,000 kinds of herbs and over 100,000 trees. It is considered the most complete site for learning about herbs in town. Recently, Mahidol University has a plan to develop this garden and surrounding reserve space of 171 rai (68.4 acre) to a world class conservation area. It will turn old traditional Thai wisdom into a model for modern environmental studies and plant conservation of Thailand. The botanical garden consists of 4 learning centers: Learning Center for Herbs, Herb Studies and Wetland Preservation Center, Center for Plant and Herb Genetic Conservation, and Center for Transformative Learning. In addition, this area is an important bird habitat in this area. 19 Security Office The Security Office commits to provide safety and security to everyone in Salaya Campus. Over on-duty 50 security officers, equipped with radio transceivers, are ready to respond to emergency inquiry 24 hours. Inquiry can be requested by walking in or the Call Center 0-2441-4400. The service includes accident, crime, infrastructure, roadside assistances, lost and found and escort services. In addition, it is a center to call a cab and announce- ment request in Salaya Campus. 20 White Ducks Court & Canal The court offers green area next to a large pond covering the area of 7 rai (2.8 acre). The name implies the main landmark of the court, a flock of white artificial ducks walking down the pond on one side and walking up on the other. 22 MU Cafeteria MU Cafeteria is the main Cafeteria of the university offering 28 food shops serving food, drink and dessert to over 1,300 people each day. The hygienic is the priority of this cafeteria with the melamine kitchenware, industry-grade dishwasher, utensil blancher, and food disposal bin. There are regular check and assessment on food and building to assure the service quality. In addition, there are many facilities such as steam fans, televisions, ATM machines, and drinking water dispenser. MU Cafeteria open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. 25 The Harmony by MU The Harmony by MU is a university souvenir shop located at the first floor of the Office of the President. The shop offers a collection of souvenirs from many faculties and institutes of Mahidol University such as books, bags, brooches, mugs, dishes and many other products with university logos. Visitors can make a donation to university foundations. The benefit of this shop will go to student and university activities and scholarship. 26 The Cottage by MU One-floor detached woodhouse with terraces contained its 3 sides is located next to pesticide-free vegetable farm. It offers close-to- nature atmosphere, where various kinds of non-toxic vegetable and natural health products can be purchased. The project has been initiated by the collaboration between the university and the members of Salaya district agricultural housewife, which not only aims to boost up local people’s career and also to benefit students, university staff, and others to consume fresh, hygienic and non-toxic vegetable including natural health products at reasonable price. 27 Chao Por Khuntoong Shrine Chao Por Khuntoong Shrine was built in 1991 as a house of a sacred spirit near by an enormous banyan tree next to International College. The spirit is believed to be a protector of students, staff and all residences at Mahidol University from devils. People pay respect to the spirit by giving areca nuts with betel leaves, kites, cigarettes and white rum. 28 Mahidol Court Mahidol Court is a green area covering the area of 9 rai (3.6 acre). On both sides, two columns of large trees and outdoor tables direct the sight from the road to the main sculpture of H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla’s royal cipher, which under H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s permission to use as the symbol of Mahidol University. The royal cipher is decorated with a rowel and a trident under the royal crown of the prince wholly covered in gold leaf. The court is used for important ceremonies of the university and students activities. 29 Chaofaa Garden Chaofaa Garden is a 10-rai (4-acre) green space, filled with large trees, little bridges, and a winey brick trails for a relaxing walk especially in the morning. The outdoor tables are scattered all over the garden, which are well liked by the university students and staffs. 30 Parking Lots To solve the urgent parking problem on campus, the university builds 3 parking lots. The Parking 1 has an area of 7 rai (2.8 acre) can accom- modate 378 cars. The Parking 2 has an area of 6 rai (2.4 acre) can accommodate 320 cars. The Parking 3 has an area of 3 rai (1.2 acre) can accommodate 160 cars. Parking 1, 2 and 3 have security officers on duty and special tram routes to shuttle drivers during rush hours in the morning and evening. The parking lots open daily from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. 32 31 1 Mahidol Main Auditorium Mahidol Main Auditorium is a 5-floor building, along with 2-floor underground parking lot for 152 cars, makes a total floor area of 31,426 m2. The auditorium includes orchestra pit, stage, his/her majesty section, exhibition room, rehearsing room, performer room. The building exterior concept derives from the physical structure of plants and humans, the shape of university tree “Kanpai Mahidol”, and the Thai-house architecture, which represents Mahidol University’s strong background in medicine. The building can facilitate broad types of national and international events such as ceremonies, academic conferences and exhibitions. The building construction started in September 2009 and expects the completion in 2012. Music Auditorium Music Auditorium, College of Music (MACM) Hall is in the area of Building B of the Bhumibol Sangkeet Building. The main purpose of the Hall is for musical performances. The interior is treated as an open stage, in which the musicians and the audience share the same space producing effective acoustic dimension. The hall is equipped with adjustable acoustics, a reverberation chamber & acoustic curtains to aid support and control the quality of each and every function. MACM Hall is the site to more than 100 concerts by students, members of the faculty, and internationally recognized performers, annually. It is also a home to the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO). 18 A Guide to S a l a y a Campus The Salaya Pavilion The Salaya Pavilion is a 4-star hotel operated by International College since 1999. It is a training center for the under- graduate students in the Tourism and Hospitality Management Program. The hotel offers accommodations in both standard and suite rooms, Herb Garden Restaurant, Little Mango Bar Coffee Shop and multi-function rooms to organize your meeting, training, conference, or exhibition. 9 Tram Service Tram service is a mass transportation system serving people in Salaya Campus. There 16 trams: 13 of 28-seat tram, and 3 of 24-seat tram, which can use both natural gas and gasoline as a fuel. The tram body is decorated with fun graphics and university slogans; available in 3 patterns, Kanpai Mahidol flower (the symbolic plant of Mahidol University), campus buildings, and windmills. Tel : 0-2441-4400 Dog Shelter Dog shelter is a group of 3 one-floor buildings, abounds to fresh air and breezy inside. Each building is surrounded by a fence, accommodated 40 stray dogs. It aims to systematically and sustainably settle down a problem of more than 100 stray dogs in the university, which is managed by Faculty of Veterinary Science. The dogs are nourished with nutrient food and received regular treatment. In addition, the dogs are trained to be well behaved in preparation for the new owners to adopt.
