Summary of Exodus Chapters 1 – 10
Chapter 1: The Jewish Church was started from the seventy souls that issued from Jacob and his twelve sons. They
multi[plied exceedingly while they were in Egypt, awakening in the new king a concern that they might join with the
enemies of the state if war should break out in Egypt. Accordingly he has the nation of Israel enslaved and put to work in
hard labor in the fields and in brick making. He even goes so far as to order thee Hebrew midwives to kill the men
children born to Hebrew women – a directive that the midwives refused to perform – so he orders the Egyptians to cast
any manchild of the Hebrews into the river.
Chapter 2: Amram of the House of Levi married Jochebed of the same house. She conceived a son whom she kept
hidden for three months. After this time she placed her son in a basket of reeds and set it into the Nile river, sending her
daughter Miriam to watch and see what is to befall the child. Pharaoh's daughter came to bathe in the river and spotted
the basket. She sent her maid to fetch and open the basket. Inside she saw that there was a Hebrew baby boy. Miriam
presented herself and offered to call a Hebrew nurse to care for the child. When given leave to do so she brought Jochebed
who was told by Pharaoh's daughter that she would be paid wages to nurse for the child. Pharaoh's daughter called the
child Moses: v12b “. . .because I have drawn him out of the water.” At age forty moses saw an Egyptian beating an
Israelite slave and killed the Egyptian. The next day he tried to in intervene between two Israelites but was challenged by
one with the question: v14 “. . .Who made thee a Prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me as thou killedest
the Egyptian?” Moses realized that the murder of the Egyptian was known, and fearing Pharaoh's retaliation he fled to
