<p>2017 MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT WEST LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY FRIDAY, JANUARY THIRTEENTH, TWO THOUSAND SEVENTEEN MONMO UTH UNIVERSITYNEW J E R S E Y 1 933 THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION AND REGALIA The commencement ceremony processional begins with faculty marshals designated by the provost leading the faculty followed by the student marshals who lead the candidates for degree. The platform party follows and consists of members of the president’s cabinet, vice provost for graduate studies, academic school deans, members of the Board of Trustees, clergy, faculty council chair, honorary degree recipient and the president. The history of academic dress reaches far back into the earliest days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the fourteenth century, the statutes of certain colleges prescribed the wearing of a long gown. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Europe, the wearing of a robe often signified a degree candidate’s political or religious affiliation; in the northern universities and those of the British Isles, the robes signified that tuition and boarding fees of the wearer had been paid and also entitled him to special immunities in civil law—as well as providing him warmth at lectures and chapel. When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable system of academic apparel, a conference held at Columbia University in 1895, made up of representatives from various institutions, drew up a “By-Law, Regulation, or Statute” for the establishment of a suitable code of academic dress for colleges and universities in the United States. This code, with modifications made in 1959 by the Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies of the American Council on Education, is still in force; the costumes and colors, trimmings, and patterns you will see are traditional, and interpret both the degree and field of learning. The bachelor’s gown, designed to be worn closed, has pointed sleeves; the master’s gown, which may be worn open or closed, has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist that hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has the arc cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It may be worn open or closed. Black is the recommended color for all academic gowns. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctor’s gowns are faced with black velvet, with three bars across the sleeves, or the color of the velvet may be that which is distinctive to the degree, agreeing with that of the edging of the hood. In the 1960s, many American land-grant universities adopted the British and the Scottish tradition of using the official school color(s) for the robes of their doctoral recipients—for instance, Yale: sky blue; Harvard: crimson; University of Pennsylvania: scarlet and blue; Columbia: slate gray; Rutgers: deep red and black. The colors you will see in the hoods of our faculty represent the various fields in which the degrees were taken: Apricot: Nursing Orange: Engineering Brown: Fine Arts Pink: Music Citron: Social Work Purple: Law Crimson: Journalism Sage Green: Physical Education Dark Blue: Philosophy Salmon Pink: Public Health Golden Yellow: Science Scarlet: Theology Green: Medicine Yellow-Brown: Commerce, Business, Accountancy Lemon-Yellow: Library Science White: Arts, Letters, Humanities Light Blue: Education The hoods, differing in length for the three degrees—bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s—are lined with the official colors of the university or college conferring the degree, usually with one color forming a chevron pattern over the other. Hoods are edged and bound with velvet or the color appropriate for the degree. You will see in our procession many hoods edged with dark blue, representing doctor of philosophy. Mortarboards are the approved headgear. The tassel, worn on the left side of the cap, may be of gold if the holder has a doctor’s degree. In the procession, first come the faculty members, then the candidates for degrees arranged in the order in which degrees are to be conferred, and finally, the speakers, trustees, administrative officers, candidates for honorary degrees, and other members of the platform party. 1 Founded in 1933, Monmouth is a private, mid-sized, comprehensive university with a broad commitment to the liberal arts. Nashville, Atlantic Nashville, and Elektra Nashville. In September 2009, Esposito became the first executive to head this division, which was created to expand Warner Music’s presence in the Nashville music community. He was promoted to Chairman and CEO in May 2016. Under his leadership, WMN has made history with artists taking home numerous trophies in a full range of categories from New Artist of the Year to Entertainer of the Year from organizations including the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, American Music Awards, and more. With a quadruple increase in share on the singles charts, WMN artists have amassed more than a year (55 weeks) at No. 1 since his arrival, including 39 No. 1 singles and multiple gold and platinum sales certifications. Prior to joining Warner Music Nashville, Esposito was president and CEO of WEA Corp., Warner Music Group’s U.S. sales and retail marketing company, where he was responsible for U.S. sales and marketing activities, distribution and global management, and distribution of Warner Music's digital assets. Esposito previously served as general manager and executive vice president at the Island Def Jam Music Group. He also held a variety of executive positions at PolyGram, Inc. Esposito created WMG’s environmental campaign, WMGreen, for which he was awarded the Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) "Forces for Nature" honor in 2006 for his leadership on environmental issues. A dedicated environmentalist, he serves on the NRDC’s Global Leadership Council and also serves on the advisory boards for the Air Service Coalition, created by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, and for FLO {thinkery}. Nashville’s mayor, Megan Barry, recently appointed Esposito to the Livable Nashville Committee, which consists of community leaders who work together to improve the livability, sustainability, and health of the city. He is also the chairman of the Country Music Association Board of Directors, board member for the T.J. Martell Foundation, the Country Radio Broadcasters and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp., and a governor to the Nashville Chapter Board of NARAS for 2015-2017. Esposito holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is an accomplished guitar player and drummer. Presented by President Paul R. Brown 5 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD CHRISTIE RAMPONE ’99 HN ’05 Christie Pearce Rampone ’99 HN ’05, a three-sport standout in soccer, basketball, and field hockey during her time at Monmouth University, is the most capped active soccer player in the world. She is inarguably one of the most outstanding athletes that New Jersey has ever produced. Rampone won her first Olympic medal in her inaugural appearance at the 2000 Games, when the U.S. women’s soccer team earned silver. Subsequently, she appeared in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics and took home a gold medal each time. In addition to her Olympic appearances, Rampone is one of only two players in the world — man or woman — who has competed in five World Cups. She was a member of the Women’s World Cup championship teams in 1999 and 2015. Her appearance in 2015 made her the oldest player ever to appear in a Women’s World Cup game. After this victory, accolades for Rampone and the U.S. Women’s National Team included the cover of Sports Illustrated, and a historic tickertape parade in New York City — the first time a women’s team was so honored. A member of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1997 to 2015, she was its captain from 2008. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Rampone was raised in Point Pleasant, N.J., where she was a four-sport high school athlete, competing in basketball, soccer, field hockey, and track. At Monmouth, Rampone was a two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year in soccer (1995 and 1996), and she remains Monmouth’s all-time leading scorer in soccer with 79 goals, 54 assists, and 212 points. Rampone led the Hawks to a combined 51-11 record over her final three seasons on the pitch. A four-year member of the basketball team, she remains tied for the record for most steals at Monmouth. In 2009, Rampone was both coach and player for Sky Blue FC while winning the Women’s Professional Soccer playoffs. She was named the WPS Sportswoman of the Year in 2009 and continues to play for Sky Blue FC. Rampone, who has remained close to the university since her graduation, was the recipient of an honorary degree for public service in 2005 and was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 2007. She is a spokesperson for Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, where she has been honored as a local hero. In 2015, she was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. She, her husband, Chris, and their two daughters continue to make their home in New Jersey. Christie has been a spokesperson for the sandwich chain, Jersey Mike’s, since 2012. Rampone and her family have announced plans to open two of the restaurants in Toms River, N.J. Presented by Trustee and President of the Alumni Association, Karen F.
