At ambient temperatures: Mechanical hazard. Dust may cause mechanical irritation to skin, eyes and
respiratory tract. Powdered material may form explosive dust-air mixtures.
At elevated temperatures: Contact with molten material may cause severe thermal burns. High vapour
concentrations may cause drowsiness. See "Other Health Effects" Section. Can decompose at high
temperatures forming toxic gases.
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW:
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
At ambient temperatures: Excessive contact with powder may cause drying of mucous membranes of
nose and throat due to absorption of moisture and oils.
At elevated temperatures: Prolonged exposure to processing fumes may cause eye and respiratory tract
irritation. Overexposure may cause headaches and nausea. Prolonged and repeated exposure may
cause pulmonary fibrosis. See "Other Health Effects" Section.
Inhalation:
At ambient temperatures: This product may cause irritation due to abrasive action. Product has a
tendency to cling to skin due to static charge. Care must be exercised to remove all product from skin.

Effects (irritancy) on the skin and eyes may be delayed, and damage may occur without the sensation or
onset of pain. Strict adherence to first aid measures following any exposure is essential.

present a slippage hazard. Under normal processing conditions, the material is a hot, molten plastic.
Contact with hot molten plastics cause severe thermal burns to skin contact areas and eyes. The interior
of molten masses may remain hot for some time because of low thermal conductivity of the polymer.
Generally, it is recommended not to remove plastic that has hardened in contact with skin, but to cool it
by gently flooding the area with copious quantities of cool water. In all such cases, immediately seek
medical attention.
In general, long-term exposure to high concentrations of dust may cause increased mucous flow in the
nose and respiratory system airways. This condition usually disappears after exposure stops.
Controversy exists as to the role exposure to dust has in the development of chronic bronchitis
(inflammation of the air passages into the lungs). Other factors such as smoking and general air
pollution are more important, but dust exposure may contribute. (4)
May cause pneumoconiosis. Pneumoconiosis is the deposition of dust in the lungs and the tissue's
reaction to its presence. When exposure to the dust is severe or prolonged, the lungs' defenses are
overwhelmed. At elevated temperatures: High vapour concentration may cause central nervous system
(CNS) depression. CNS depression is characterized by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea,
vomiting and incoordination. Severe overexposures may lead to coma and possible death due to
respiratory failure.

FIRST AID PROCEDURES
At ambient temperatures, material is a coarsely divided solid and is inert and essentially harmless. It can
present a slippage hazard. Under normal processing conditions, the material is a hot polymer. Contact
with hot molten materials cause severe burns to skin contact areas and eyes. Generally, it is
recommended not to remove material that has hardened in contact with skin, but to cool it by gently
flooding the area with copious quantities of cool water. In all such cases, immediately seek medical
attention.
General Guidelines:
Move victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration ONLY if breathing has stopped. Give cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) if there is no breathing AND no pulse. Obtain medical attention IMMEDIATELY.
Inhalation:
At ambient temperatures: Start flushing while removing contaminated clothing. Wash affected areas
thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation, redness, or a burning sensation develops and persists,
obtain medical advice.
At elevated temperatures: For thermal skin burns, remove clothing, any jewelry, and gross debris from
the burned area. Immediately flush the affected area with large amounts of water. Do not attempt to
peel polymer from skin. Leave the blisters intact. Cover the wounded area with gauze dressing
moistened with cool water; keep the dressing moist. Seek medical attention immediately. See "Note to
Physicians" below.
Skin Contact:
At normal temperatures: Immediately flush eyes with running water for a minimum of 20 minutes. Hold
eyelids open during flushing. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Obtain medical attention
IMMEDIATELY.
At elevated temperatures: For thermal eye burns, remove any jewelry, and gross debris from the burned
area. Immediately flush the affected area with large amounts of water. Do not attempt to peel. Leave
the blisters intact. Cover the wounded area with gauze dressing moistened with cool water; keep the
dressing moist. Seek medical attention immediately. See "Note to Physicians" below.
Eye Contact:
Do not attempt to give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If victim is alert and not convulsing,
rinse mouth out and give 1/2 to 1 glass of water to dilute material. DO NOT induce vomiting. If
spontaneous vomiting occurs, have victim lean forward with head down to avoid breathing in of vomitus,
rinse mouth and administer more water. Obtain medical attention IMMEDIATELY.
Ingestion:
At ambient temperatures: Treat symptomatically.
At elevated temperatures: Treatment for thermal, surface burns:
1. Immerse the burned part immediately in ice water to relieve pain and to prevent swelling and
blistering. Place cold packs, ice or wet cloths on the burned area if immersion is not possible.
2. Remove anything that is constrictive, such as rings, bracelets or footwear, before swelling begins.
3. Cover the burn with a clean, preferably sterile, lint-free dressing.
4. For severe burns, immediately seek medical attention and monitor breathing and treat for shock.
Medical conditions that may be aggravated by exposure to this product include diseases of the skin,
eyes or respiratory tract.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Information in this section is for responding to spills, leaks or releases in order to prevent or minimize the adverse effects on persons,
property and the environment. There may be specific reporting requirements associated with spills, leaks or releases, which change from
region to region.
In all cases of leak or spill contact vendor at Emergency Number shown on the front page of this MSDS.
Avoid accumulation and dispersion of dust to reduce explosion potential. Wear respirator, protective
clothing and gloves. Avoid dry sweeping. Do not use compressed air to clean surfaces. Vacuuming or
wet sweeping is preferred. Return all material possible to container for proper disposal. Spilled material
may cause floors and contact surfaces to become slippery. Any recovered product can be used for the
usual purpose, depending on the extent and kind of contamination. Where a package (drum or bag) is
damaged and / or leaking, repair it, or place it into an over-pack drum immediately so as to avoid or
minimize material loss and contamination of surrounding environment. Replace damaged containers
immediately to avoid loss of material and contamination of surrounding atmosphere. Recover spilled
material on non-combustible absorbents, such as sand or vermiculite, and place in covered containers
for disposal. Use spark-resistant tools. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Collect product for recovery or
disposal. For release to land, or storm water runoff, contain discharge by constructing dykes or applying
inert absorbent; for release to water, utilize damming and/or water diversion to minimize the spread of
contamination. Ventilate enclosed spaces. Notify applicable government authority if release is
reportable or could adversely affect the environment.
In order to prevent marine species and birds from ingesting pellets, emphasis should be placed on total
containment of plastic pellets through their lifespan. This should be accomplished through rapid cleanup
of spills, providing appropriate containment systems to prevent pellet discharge from a facility, and
ensuring proper securement of pellets during shipping, return or disposal. Avoid contaminating soil or
releasing this material into sewage and drainage systems and bodies of water. (3)

Post signs warning of high temperatures (i.e. molten materials and hot equipment). This product may be
capable of forming flammable dust clouds in air. Minimize air borne spreading of dust. Ground and bond
equipment and containers to prevent a static charge buildup. Use spark-resistant tools and avoid
"splash-filling" of containers. Use normal "good" industrial hygiene and housekeeping practices. Clean
up immediately to eliminate slipping hazard. Spilled material may cause floors and contact surfaces to
become slippery.
Static neutralisers may be added when the powders are pneumatically conveyed. Pneumatic conveying
of this product can generate fines and dust particles that can, under certain conditions, pose an
explosion hazard. We recommend that the conveying system used be: (1) equipped with filters of
adequate size; (2) operated and maintained in such a manner to ensure that no leaks develop; and (3)
adequately grounded.
Provide adequate mechanical ventilation at the points of extrusion where the polymer is at elevated
temperatures coming from extruder into dies, molds etc. (3)

In order to avoid autoignition / hazardous decomposition of hot thick masses of plastic, purging should
be collected in small, flat shapes or thin strands to allow for rapid cooling, followed immediately by a
quench in water. (3) Spilled molten material may be hot, but will solidify on cooling.
Handling Practices:
Provide adequate mechanical ventilation at the points of extrusion where the polymer is at elevated
temperatures coming from extruder into dies, molds etc. (3) The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air
conditioning system) must be regularly inspected and maintained to avoid contaminants build-up in air
filters. This build-up reduces the effectiveness of the ventilation. Volatile constituents of this product may
gradually degrade canvas, cloth or plastic components such as seals and flexible tube coverings of
adjustable point source ventilation equipment. Preventative programs should consider this. See Section
8, "Engineering Controls".
Ventilation Requirements:
Use only with adequate ventilation and avoid breathing dusts ( fumes or vapours ). Risk of spontaneous
ignition may arise if freshly manufactured material is not allowed to cool thoroughly before stacking in
bulk. (4) Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
Wash contaminated clothing thoroughly before re-use. Install non-slip surfaces around machinery and
equipment where spills may occur. Install drip pans. Provide duckboards or other non-slip footing in
frequently wet areas.
Avoid dry sweeping. Avoid air blowing.

Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Keep away from heat, sparks and flames. Keep containers

expose sealed containers to temperatures above 40 Deg. Celcius. Avoid direct sunlight. Protect against
physical damage.
Storage Requirements:
Materials of construction for storing the product include: Multi-layer polyethylene bags or sacks; fiber
drum. Confirm suitability of any material before using.

ENGINEERING CONTROLS
At ambient temperatures: Local exhaust ventilation required. Ventilation should be explosion proof. Make
up air should be supplied to balance air that is removed by local or general exhaust ventilation.
At elevated temperatures: Ventilate low lying areas such as sumps or pits where dense vapours may
collect.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this material. At ambient temperatures: Safety
glasses with side shields are recommended to prevent eye contact. Use dust-tight chemical safety
goggles when there is potential for eye contact.
At elevated temperatures: Use full face-shield and chemical safety goggles when there is potential for
contact.
Eye Protection:
At ambient temperatures: Gloves and protective clothing made from nitrile rubber, cotton, canvas or
rubber or plastic should be impervious under conditions of use.
At elevated temperatures: Skin protection should be insulated against hot or high temperatures.
Skin Protection:
At ambient temperatures: A NIOSH/MSHA-approved air-purifying respirator equipped with high-efficiency
particulate filters cartridges for concentrations up to 100 mg/m³.
At elevated temperatures: A NIOSH/MSHA-approved air-purifying respirator equipped with dust, mist,
fume cartridges for concentrations up to 1 000 ppm. An air-supplied respirator if concentrations are
higher or unknown.
If while wearing a respiratory protection, you can smell, taste or otherwise detect anything unusual, or in
the case of a full facepiece respirator you experience eye irritation, leave the area immediately. Check to
make sure the respirator to face seal is still good. If it is, replace the filter, cartridge or canister. If the
seal is no longer good, you may need a new respirator. (4)

Wear regular work clothing. The use of coveralls is recommended. Locate safety shower and eyewash

2.5 or 5 percent Polyethylene (Ethene, Homopolymer) for 90 days produced no adverse effects in rats.

Pure polyethylene seems to be biologically inert and does not affect the body during normal exposure.
Solid polyethylene (films, prosthetic devices, contraceptive devices) may have non-specific "irritating
effects" when implanted into the body for prolonged periods which can cause malignant tumours at the
site of implantation. This process is called "solid state carcinogenesis." (4)
Some cases of dermatitis among workers heat-sealing polyethylene bags are possibly due to acrolein,
formaldehyde and other chemicals released during the operation. (4)
Polyethylene is considered non-toxic to animals by inhalation of the dust and ingestion of the solid. (4)
Inhalation of polyethylene dusts and thermal degradation products from polyethylene caused rats to
develop mild inflammatory changes in the lungs and neurological effects, respectively. (3) Carbon
Monoxide and heat are the principal hazardous agents. (4)

Not available. Ecotoxicity is expected to be low based on the low water solubility. In the case of seabirds,
some marine biologists believe that ingestion of pellets by the fowl may cause intestinal blockage, false
feelings of satiation or reduction in absorption of nutrients, causing malnutrition and starvation. (3)

Not readily biodegradable. Low bioaccumulation potential. Do not contaminate domestic or irrigation
water supplies, lakes, streams, ponds, or rivers. In order to prevent marine species and birds from

Hazardous Polymerization:
High temperatures, sparks, open flames and all other sources of ignition. Decomposes at temperatures
above 177 °C. Minimize air borne spreading of dust. Dust can explode violently above 390 Degrees
Celsius at airborne levels above 20 g/m³. (4) Clean up immediately to eliminate slipping hazard. Avoid
direct sunlight.

Strong oxidizers. Strong acids. Alkalies. Fluorine Gas. Oxidizing agents. Nitrates. Nitric Acid. Chlorates.
Perchloric Acid. Peroxides. Halogens. Attacked by organic solvents such as benzene, petroleum ether,
gasoline, lubricating oils, chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons. (4) Solid material is softened by
hydrocarbons. (3)
Materials to Avoid:
Above 177 °C: Thermal decomposition products are toxic and may include acetaldehyde, Acetone,
Acetic Acid, Formic Acid, hydrogen chloride, hydrocarbons, oxides of carbon and irritating gases.
Above 300 °C: Thermal decomposition products are toxic and may include formaldehyde and acrolein.
