Suddenly, it’s February. The NFL playoffs are over, and the Super Bowl is coming up (go Bengals because I’m obligated to dislike the Rams as a Saints fan). The days are slowly getting longer. We’ll be talking about spring cleaning in a few more weeks. What is less and less surprising is how central the Capture industry is to ramped up efforts to digitize work and business processes. As we all know, paper clogs everything up. Poorly designed digital documents that need to be ingested also clog up business processes – maybe even “more effectively” than paper. This issue includes our □rst reminder to secure your spot for the Capture Conference later this year (September 7&8), a look at the process side of automation via a review of industry research and end of year predictions, and two short industry updates from Infosource analysts Ralph Gammon and Barbara Richards. In our next issue look for a look at relative industry newcomer Singularity, a Kofax update, and more. I think this is going to be a great year for Infosource and the Capture industry. Let’s make it happen. Thanks for reading. I've heard it's a good course. There's also a spa. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 4 Process Automation Is a CIO Priority “Advancing automation” is one of eight priorities in a CIO article, . Those of you who have been in the industry any length of time have said something like this, “Automating redundant, cost- inef□cient processes will not only help enterprises accommodate evolving customer needs following the pandemic but also better position organizations to affordably meet increasing business expectations.” 8 Top Priorities for CIOs in 2022 In another CIO article, , “AI and automation will take center stage.” CIOs spell out top tech priorities for 2022 points to both CIOs and tax leaders driving change. One interesting nugget, from a sales perspective, is what the report had to say about the role of tax leaders as unexpected collaborators in driving digital transformation: PwC’s Pulse Survey Automation Industry Growth – A Spin Through Recent Research In our , I took a quick spin around capture research from various sources. It showed what we all know – it’s a good time to be in this industry. August 16 issue last year I’m going to take a quick spin around industry research from a process perspective. As has been pointed out in nearly every issue last year, the process automation (i.e., work□ow, BPM, case management, process mining, RPA) market is on a collision course with the Capture market. The quick conclusion is similar to that for Capture – it’s a good time to be a vendor with technology that automates business processes. As with Capture, there are many moving parts in the process market, so this isn’t an exhaustive examination. My goal is to simply provide a snapshot of where we are and where we might be heading based on a portion of the research available. As I’m sure many of you already know, there is A LOT of it. Over the course of 2022, I hope to return to and expand on many of the themes here – both in these pages and online. In a whitepaper from Gartner ( ), one of the three challenges for CIOs in 2022 is to “redesign work for a hybrid model.” To do so effectively, businesses will need to invest in, among other things, automating manual business processes. Top 3 Strategic Priorities for CIOs Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 5 “That’s because tax considerations, including R&D tax credits, state tax credits and incentives and intellectual property management can help offset transformation costs, identify potential liabilities and add value. In our survey, it’s clear that many CIOs are not yet fully taking advantage of this powerful collaboration.” In the same research, with over 650 business executives, including CIOs and CTOs, responses, “60% said capitalizing on digital transformation initiatives was very important to their business in 2022. It ranked second only behind the enduring priority of hiring and retaining talent (77%).” A Quick Aside on Terminology The graphic here shows the stages in digital transformation where taxes are considered. companies to consider tax implications of their digital transformation initiative. “Digital transformation” can be a nebulous concept but automating business processes is almost always included. In my opinion, digital transformation (especially intelligent document processing and process automation) are necessary or play at least a supporting role for 4 of the 5 business initiatives driving IT investments in 2022 from IDG’s research State of the CIO □. Increasing cybersecurity protections □. Increasing operational ef□ciency □. Improving customer experience □. Transforming existing business processes □. Improving employee productivity I could share additional examples, but I think these are enough to make the point – companies continue to look to digitally transform their business. When done correctly, that always means automating document ingestion (paper or digital) and moving those documents through a work□ow to achieve a particular business objective. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 6 Hyperautomation. Capture. Capture 2.0. Intelligent Data Processing. Intelligent Document Processing. Intelligent Automation. Digital Process Automation. Process Automation. Digital Transformation. Arti□cial Intelligence. All of these phrases, and I feel like I’m missing a few, are used throughout the IT world to convey the idea of automating business processes. While digital transformation is so amorphous as to be almost anything and often seems to be used as shorthand for whatever particular technology a vendor is selling or an analyst is writing about, the others have speci□c meaning. Well, arti□cial intelligence can be stretched to cover a huge range of use cases, from automated chat and voice responses for customer service to quickly training capture implementations to identify and sort documents. “Intelligent” also seems to be shorthand for automation that includes AI. Different analyst □rms de□ne these industry segments differently. Some are weighted towards RPA and work□ow vendors. Others lean to include more of a traditional capture vendor focus. Regardless, whichever research □rm you choose (and you should include Infosource for the most accurate coverage of the industry); all of them have growth in digitization/automation markets going up and to right. That crosses every technology and combination depending on which report one reads: computer vision, machine learning, RPA, AI, process automation (work□ow, BPM, process mining, etc.), etc. The market is growing for the foreseeable future. For our purposes here at Document Imaging Report, I like the way automation is framed in a Parascript whitepaper, , written by Richard Medina of Doculabs: Intelligent Automation: Capturing the Unicorn Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 7 State of The Intelligent Information Management Industry – AIIM AIIM research reveals the gaps in end user organizations and thus opportunity for this industry. Companies continue to be ineffective with capture and process technology. This table jumped out at me, especially the middle two, as an illustration of that gap between what process and capture technology can accomplish and how companies view their use of it. Companies are performing poorly in the two essential technology capability buckets needed for digital transformation. Let’s start by talking about the unicorn. The unicorn is the combination of AI, IC, RPA and work□ow to create intelligent process automation that’s worthy of the name. Until recently, intelligent process automation was a joke: most of the tools weren’t very intelligent. They addressed tasks not processes, and they automated little because they had limited application and required human assistance. But now intelligent process automation worth its name is achievable with the combination of RPA, intelligent capture, AI and next generation process automation. RPA automates tasks, intelligent capture digitizes content to feed RPA, AI makes both RPA and intelligent capture smarter and next gen process automation orchestrates and manages all the pieces in the process. In this eBook, the focus is primarily on Intelligent Capture. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 8 The following two graphics from a different AIIM report, , illustrate the need for capture and process together. Twenty-□ve percent say the biggest challenge is digitizing, automating, and integrating processes. Conquer Information Sprawl with Process Automation That's an opportunity for vendors The second graphic indicates to me the growing need by businesses to integrate content and processes together. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 9 Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 10 Final Thoughts One of the things I’ve always found fascinating about the IT industry is that even though many IT projects fail, it’s rarely the technology that’s the main culprit. I suspect that some of the survey respondents have experienced a process automation implementation failure due to culture, lack of strategy, or lack of executive leadership. This isn't really indicative of anything beyond the technology ain't the problem -- this stuff works! As I reviewed this piece, it really struck me that the goals of what AIIM coined as the ECM industry are increasingly being met by this combination of process/capture. Of course, ECM always encompassed both of those technologies, especially capture given the association’s origins as a micro□lm standards body. Below are three of the ECM posters I helped to create during my time at AIIM. As you can see, work□ow/BPM was always considered a core, though maybe not a focus. I think the closest we got to the centrality of process for businesses was in the skyscraper poster. If I had been smarter back then, I would’ve doubled down on how the different technology pieces of ECM- enabled business processes. Hindsight is fun. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 11 These images are a little hard to read. For anyone interested, I have copies of all of these . . . somewhere in my basement. Drop me a line and I’ll do my best to dig them out and share a cleaner photo ( ). bdu@info-source.com For the puzzle poster below, the □ve technologies listed in the central area are: Document Management Work□ow/Business Process Management Web Content Management Records Management Collaboration Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 12 As a former AIIM staffer, it was always frustrating to see the vast difference between our audience (which was not insigni□cant) and the need for every business to use the technology our vendor members offered (a MUCH larger universe than our audience). We never could quite □gure out the “sexy” part. Maybe there was just too much “stuff” under the ECM umbrella for it to hang together a decade-plus ago. Though, as AIIM Fellow Baron Gemmer told me once, “Technology that saves, or makes, money is always sexy.” While I’ve not done an exhaustive survey of vendor marketing in this space, it feels like many are homing in on this “sexy” message. As ECM has morphed into almost a rump industry of “content services” focused on where you put documents, the process and capture pieces of the industry have drastically expanded in mindshare for CIOs and business. I know that’s a large over-simpli□cation and it’s obviously important to be able to safely store content for later use, but one dive into terminology per article enough! Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 13 Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 14 Infosource Insight On January 10, 2022, announced a new partnership with to offer a bundled promotion of the Kodak Alaris S2060W departmental scanner with a Laser□che Cloud subscription. The promotion entails with each package of □ve or more Laser□che licenses, customers will receive a free scanner. Promotion availability is currently North America only. According to Leonel Da Costa, Americas regional managing director at KA, “Our partnership will provide partners and customers alike with world-class solutions and support that is unmatched in this industry.” Based in Long Beach, CA, Laser□che is a content services ISV with a strong mid-market presence and VAR channel. Laser□che launched a SaaS version of its product in 2016 and it now accounts for over half of new sales in North America. Kodak Alaris Laser□che This new partnership will build on Kodak Alaris’s status as a Laser□che Technology Alliance Partner. The organizations will work together to develop and bring to market applications that enhance employee and customer experiences, and drive enterprise wide-digital transformation. Tala Baltazar, director of corporate relations at Laser□che further highlighted the partnership by stating “Kodak Alaris’s industry expertise and proven product performance make it a natural □t for Laser□che’s suite of content services.” Laserfiche & Kodak Alaris Announce Joint Partnership and Bundle Promotion Kodak Alaris is consistently a market leader within the departmental scanners segment in North America. This bundled promotion with Laser□che provides their channel partners an opportunity to up-sell to cloud services, a natural progression for many resellers. In addition, while Kodak Alaris is currently offering the bundled promotion with their wireless S2060W scanner today, it would be in KA’s best interest to expand this promotion to include integration with their Infuse smart connected scanning solution in the near future. From our perspective this is a win-win for both KA and Laser□che and their partners alike. In 2022, Infosource predicts we will continue to see an expansion of integrated cloud-based solutions from hardware scanner vendors and Capture ISVs. ( ) is Senior Analyst Hardware, Infosource. Barbara Richards br@info-source.com Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 15 Objectif Lune Acquisition Strengthens Upland’s Offering to Hardware Vendors has announced the acquisition of output management ISV Objectif Lune, which develops software for managing print and electronic output. Combined with Upland’s Capture technology, this creates a document-centric, input-to-output offering that Upland can now present to MFP vendors and users. You can . Upland Software read the announcement here Upland views Objectif Lune as enabling it to “support even more of the document lifecycle for our customers,” which is certainly a trend we are seeing as Capture is being integrated more often as a part of larger solutions. This started with integration with ECM/records management and work□ow. More recently we’ve seen Capture being integrated with leading RPA and BPM offerings. The idea of combining Capture and output management is not new. Austria- based was a pioneer in this area, expanding from print management with a 1999 acquisition of a Capture vendor. is also a major player in this integrated area through its acquisition of Nuance, which it added to with last year’s acquisition of Printix. Nuance had acquired multiple print management and MFP-focused Capture ISVs before being sold to Kofax, which rolled up these products into its ControlSuite offering. also has print management technology to pair with Capture. ISIS Papyrus Kofax OpenText Capture software can be deployed in a lot of places – the need to understand unstructured information and onboard it reaches across multiple business processes. Hardware vendors like HP are certainly looking more closely at the document input to output lifecycle. Historically, their businesses have been driven by printing, but as volumes decline, and many of their devices now include scanning capabilities, Capture represents a natural direction for expansion. It helps the print vendors embrace the trend toward digital documents. Infosource itself has a heritage covering the print market and a couple years ago bought HSA, Inc., which brought us into covering Capture Software. So, the Objectif Lune acquisition caught our attention. Based in Canada, Objectif Lune develops software for electronic and print output as well as mobile forms. Upland is a roll up of multiple companies in the enterprise software space, primarily delivering its solutions through a SaaS model. Document Imaging Report - February 3, 2022 Page 16 Objectif Lune will be rolled into Upland’s Work□ow Automation business line, which is based on the FileBound Capture, work□ow, and document management suite that Upland acquired in 2013. Upland □eshed out its business this area with the acquisition of Omtool in 2017. Omtool specialized in integrating its software with MFP hardware to create secure fax server and document Capture applications, with AccuRoute being its □agship product. In addition to AccuRoute, Upland recently launched Intelligent Capture, a cloud-based, AI-driven service, which is now being resold by HP. Like the FileBound and AccuRoute products, Objectif Lune’s software will continue to be available from Upland as a hybrid offering, either on-prem, in the cloud, or through a mix. Upland will continue to bring the software to market through Objectif Lune’s channel, which includes many of the large MFP vendors. Only now, Upland will be able to offer a complete scan, work□ow, and print solution from a single vendor. Capture to process is the name of the game these days, with print/output emerging as another yet avenue of integration for creating end-to-end solutions. We expect to see more activity along these lines going forward. ( ) Ralph Gammon rg@info-source.com is a Senior Analyst, Software, at Infosource.
