Contrary to popular belief, men are not the only victims of sexual dysfunction. Women are also at
risk of losing their sexual appetite. In the United States alone, about 38 million women suffered from
sexual dysfunction in 2003. Moreover, about 43 percent of women in the age range of 18 to 59 suffer
from loss of orgasm and low sexual desire.
Women are more likely to suffer from low libido or lack of sex drive than men. Why is it more common
for women to lose sexual interest than men? Libido in women is way more complex than libido in men.
Male libido concerns only the physical aspect. In contrast, female libido is influenced by numerous
physical and psychological factors.
The physical causes of low libido in women include illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.
Weight-related disorders such as anorexia or obesity are not food for the sexual health. Medications,
fatigue, excessive alcohol intake, and drug abuse also contribute to lack of sex drive in women. Certain
periods in a woman's life result in hormonal changes, which in turn affect female libido. These include
pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and menopause.
