What is a Couplet/Triplet? A Couplet is a two-line poem that rhymes. Each line contains the same number of syllables. A Triplet is a three line poem that rhymes and each line has the same number of syllables. You may combine a series of Couplets or Triplets to extend your poem. Couplets/Triplets can be simple, funny, serious or witty. Examples of Couplet/Triplet Poetry Starfish (Couplets) I found a starfish in the bay When I was fishing yesterday Starfish, starfish in the ocean Moving along in slow motion. Many arms and color bright Sea stars are a special sight. Fishing (Couplets) Fish hooks floating through the sea, The little fish say, “Don’t catch me!” Pulling, tugging on the line, Oh, no! Look! He is mine! Kites(Triplet) Up, up up in flight Sails my rainbow Kite What a pretty sight. How to Write Couplet/Triplet Poetry Step 1. Choose a topic The topics for Couplet/Triplet poetry are unlimited. However, as you start to write, it might be easiest to chose a person, place or thing that is easy to rhyme. As you browse through these pictures you may encounter one that you would like to write a poem about. Once you have selected your topic please continue with step two. Once you have selected a topic, please move on to the next step in writing Couplet/Triplet poetry. As an example to help you through this process I will pick a topic and work with it through the following steps. In the end I will have my final Couplet poem. The topic I will choose to help illustrate how to go about writing a Couplet poem is............a CLOWN. Please notice that I have picked an easy word to rhyme. Please continue to scroll.
