IN THIS ISSUE ♦ Students and Information Technology in Higher Education Daytona Beach Campus (2009) IR PREVIEW Preliminary highlights from current IR studies Office of Institutional Research http://irweb.erau.edu Daytona Beach, FL 32114-3900 (386)226-6225 Volume 11, Number 1 November 2009 The ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology was developed in 2004 by EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. The survey is administered annually to undergraduate students at four-year colleges and universities nationwide. The survey seeks to gather data from first- year and senior level students in order to provide information on undergraduate students’ use of, preferences, and expectations for information technology. Students are asked about the technology they own and how they use it in and out of their academic world. Information is also gathered about how skilled students believe they are with technologies; how they perceive technology is affecting their learning experience; and their preferences for IT in courses. The 2009 study also includes a special focus on student ownership and use of Internet-capable handheld devices. EDUCAUSE administered the 2009 Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology to all first year and senior students at the Daytona Beach campus. Of the 2,470 first year and senior students enrolled in the Spring 2009 term, 326 (13%) were completed. ERAU has participated since 2007. ♦ The Students ♦ Daytona Beach Campus Figure 3 Amount of information technology preferred in courses: 10% 10% 15% 62% 57% 53% 29% 33% 32% 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% 2007 2008 2009 Limited or none A moderate level Extensively or exclusively Figure 1 How should your institution first notify you of a campus emergency? 0% 1% 1% 1% 11% 16% 27% 43% 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% ERAU's website Other Instant message Facebook E‐mail Public‐address systems Voice telephone call Text message Figure 2 Change in Technology Ownership (Percent of students who own a…) 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1 2007 2008 2009 Cellphone w/ Internet Laptop Computer Desktop Computer November 2009 Volume 11, Number 1 Page 2 IR PREVIEW ♦ Information Technology and Learning Figure 4 Information Technology Skills (Percent responding ‘Expert’ or ‘Very Skilled’) 42% 60% 24% 67% 54% 55% 36% 82% 49% 68% 29% 71% 56% 57% 39% 84% 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% Computer maintenance Evaluating reliability of online info Graphics software Presentation software Spreadsheets Understand ethical issues digital info Using the university library website Using Internet to search for inf 2009 2008 Figure 5 Which of the following best describes you? 2% 4% 45% 34% 15% 4% 7% 37% 34% 18% 0% 20% 40% 60% I am skeptical of new technologies and use them only when I have to.
