LEAD EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

CLASS SUMMARY
Performs lead and skilled automotive equipment maintenance and repair work for the City.
Work involves leading and participating in the timely and thorough diagnosis and repair of a
variety of gasoline and diesel powered automotive equipment and related electrical, electronic,
hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Work also involves scheduling and maintaining vehicle
maintenance, maintaining vehicle records and parts inventories, ensuring that vehicles and
equipment are in proper working order by using modern preventative maintenance schedules,
and educating operators on methods used to extend the life of vehicles. Although formal
supervision of others is not a requirement of the position in this classification, the employee is
responsible for receiving and conveying directions, taking the lead in performing assigned tasks,
and ensuring that tasks are properly completed. Work is performed independently under
administrative direction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -- Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic defects and problems
on cars, light and heavy trucks, and public works equipment such as street sweepers and sewer
line cleaning equipment; operates a variety of diagnostic engine and other testing equipment;
performs safety inspections.
Directs and participates in performing minor repairs and maintenance on vehicles and
equipment; plans, coordinates, and evaluates the preventative maintenance program and
participates in preventative maintenance activities; recommends replacement of vehicles.
Directs and participates in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and electrical, hydraulic,
engine cooling, lighting, starting, and charging systems on gasoline or diesel powered
equipment; operates drills, lathes, engine analyzers, and other electrical or electronic
equipment.
