Worried about driving lesson costs?
Getting a parent to teach you to drive?
Learning to drive with a professional driving instructor can seem expensive which makes it totally
understandable why learners often ask a parent to teach them to drive. Whilst your parents may be very
competent drivers and have been driving for years, teaching someone this skill is a very different thing.
A professional instructor can help provide good foundations and skills and with practice with a parent you
will progress more quickly, saving you money on your driving lessons.
The DVSA say that it takes on average 45 hours of driving lessons for someone to pass their test, with
quality professional driving lessons most will pass sooner. Those who take professional lessons and
practice with a parent can often pass in even less.
Parents can often find it difficult to explain key concepts and how they do things, it can be quite stressful
for parent and learner when they first start practising. Parents often find they may have slipped into bad
habits and may need to brush up on their skills and Highway Code. Rules and techniques change over the
years so you may both learn something, as learners explain how they have been taught.
Anyone teaching you to drive should remain calm and encouraging, helping you to believe in capabilities,
so you can drive confidently. They should be able to clearly explain what you need to do and how you
should do this. Maybe even presenting a number of methods as what works for one person may not be
the easiest for someone else.
Learning to drive is an exciting time for most learners and it should be a positive and fun experience.
