Fostering European innovation. Stronger together. MFG Baden-Württemberg Centre of Excellence for IT and Media Baden-Württemberg: Connected MFG is the managing office of Baden-Württemberg: Con- nected (bwcon), the leading business initiative for innova- tion and technology in Baden- Württemberg. With close to 4,000 employees in its 400 participating companies, the initiative is one of the most successful business networks in Europe. It promotes innovation and sustainable growth in the areas of ICT, life sciences/health and the creative sectors, as well as at their interfaces. www.bwcon.de FAZIT Research This four-year research project focuses on the identification of new markets for innovative IT and media technologies. Repre- sentative surveys and Delphi studies highlight future business opportunities. As lead partner, MFG carries out research management and co- ordinates the activities of well-known project partners: the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW, Mannheim) and the Fraun- hofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI, Karlsruhe). www.fazit-research.org Heidelberg Innovation Forum Twice a year, the Hei- delberg Innovation Forum brings together IT researchers and entrepreneurs to share high- potential business ideas from current IT research. MFG organises this event in cooperation with the European Media Laboratory (EML), led by SAP- founder Klaus Tschira. www.heidelbergerinnovationsforum.de EPROC MFG acts as German partner in the Interreg III project EPROC, a collaborative European initiative with partners in the Netherlands, Ireland and Wales. Types of cooperation MFG’s cooperative efforts take on various shapes: joint projects, especially on a European level, joint cluster or networking initiatives, knowledge and technology transfer or simply informal information exchange. MFG Baden-Württemberg is the Centre of Excel- lence for IT and Media in the Southwest of Ger- many. Over 50 employees are currently involved in close to 100 projects. With a certified innovation management system (ISO 9001) and over 60,000 documented technology partnerships, MFG is the ideal partner for successful project devel- opment and management – on regional, national and international scales. MFG is also embedded in Surveys and studies MFG is well positioned to conduct surveys and study programs on selected topics related to IT, media and innova- tion. Training and events MFG offers seminars and training to its target groups and various stakeholders, and organises conferences and get-togethers. Coordination of networks Building on its extensive contact database, MFG cre- ates networks and interest groups addressing current, high-profile innovation topics. Dissemination MFG conducts targeted dissemination programs for both European and inter- national projects, facilitating knowledge transfer to Germany. Technology marketing MFG brings together science and industry, supporting the commercial exploitation of innovative research and development. Cooperation support MFG creates links between suppliers and technology users, as well as between national and international firms and organisations. Consulting and trend-scouting MFG offers advice to diverse stake- holders such as public institutions, companies expanding internationally, as well as foreign investors. Information society Recognising that a skilled, well-informed population is the cornerstone for success in the global information economy, MFG carries out projects to spread digital literacy in Baden- Württemberg. Public agency MFG is Baden-Württemberg’s Centre of Excellence for IT and Media – with the state as major shareholder. MFG reports directly to the State Ministry and conducts projects via State commission. Business network MFG is the managing office for a variety of private-sector business clusters and networks such as the Linux Solutions Group (www.lisog.org) and Baden-Württemberg: Connected (www.bwcon.de). All together, over 12,000 people are part of MFG-initiated networks. Foundation Since 2003, a dedicated MFG Foundation delivers non-profit projects in the areas of IT and media, awards scholarships and organises scientific conferences. Information and communication technologies ICT is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Baden-Württemberg. MFG, with its in-depth industry expertise, actively monitors new ICT trends and developments. It supports and assists ICT businesses in their devel- opment, helping to foster innovation and research. Creative industries Information technology continuously opens up new services and products for the creative sector. One of MFG’s main objectives is to foster innovative solutions at the interface of creativity and technology in areas such as media, design, culture, architecture and engineering. IT in the high-tech sector Information technology (IT) is a significant innovation ‘enabler’, affecting close to all traditional industry sectors. MFG places a special focus on various high-tech sectors where IT makes a clear difference, such as Automotive Software Engineering, Computational Life Science or High Speed in Production Cycles. Efficiency in the public sector MFG promotes efficiency in the public sector with a focus on e-government and on creating awareness for state-of-the- art software solutions. Internationalisation MFG conducts technology marketing programs and promotes Baden-Württemberg’s innovations internationally, supporting enterprises in their globalisation efforts. Research and development MFG has both the expertise and the administrative resources to facilitate project management for large-scale research pro- jects, and to coordinate research consortia in collaboration with industry and academic partners.
