As a driving instructor you get to help people achieve their goal of passing their driving test which opens up so
many opportunities for them. Getting your driving licence is a big event for most people and you play a huge
part in that. You will meet some lovely clients and usually enjoy your working day, no two days are ever the
same as there are always new challenges.
When you qualify as an instructor you have the option to work independently or join an established driving
school. If you join a driving school they will look after the advertising and marketing to attract new clients so
you can concentrate on what you do best, teaching.
What are the requirements to
become a driving instructor?
✓ You must be aged 21 or over
✓ Have held a driving licence for at least three years
✓ Complete and pass an enhanced criminal record and motoring conviction check
✓ Have a passion to teach
✓ Have excellent communication skills
✓ Enjoy driving!
How do I quality as an instructor?
To become a driving instructor you need to take three exams,
Part 1 a theory test this is multiple choice and will include hazard perception questions to
Part 2 driving this includes an eyesight test, vehicle safety questions and a test of your driving ability
Part 3 instructional this assesses your ability to teach, you will be assessed on your core competencies,
instructional techniques and your characteristics
You trainer will be with you every step of the way to provide support, information and help you reach you
goal.
How long it will take you to qualify depends on the time you can commit to your training and whether you are
working during your training.
