This issue of In-Control–Milwaukee features the enhanced capability of the Honeywell RM7800 burner control family, plus Honeywell’s linkageless fuel-air control system solution, ControLinks, and a two-day burner-boiler seminar/workshop, with other upcoming events you won’t want to miss! to the summer issue of In-Control–Milwaukee! Keeping you informed in the fast-changing world of controls – that’s Climatic Control Company’s goal in our continuing effort of providing you with product information, applications, technical tips, training opportunities, upcoming local events, and fun stuff, too! We welcome your comments on the topics presented. Feel free to pass this information along to others in your organization that may benefit from it. Welcome 5061 West State Street Milwaukee, WI 53208 Phone: 414-259-9070 Fax: 414-259-0613 Milwaukee Summer 2008 ENHANCED CAPABILITY IN THE FAMILIAR BLUE BOX Honeywell’s RM7800 Family of microprocessor-based inte- grated burner control continues to expand with enhanced capability and flexibility – introducing the RM7890A1056 and RM7890B1048, and even more versatile RM7840G1022, RM7840L1075, and RM7800L1087 relay modules for com- mercial and industrial combustion applications. Typical applications for the RM7890A1056 and RM7890B1048 are on/off primary control for atmospheric automatically fired, gas only, single burner applications. These models come standard with automatic burner sequencing, flame supervision, system status indication, system or self-diagnostics, and troubleshooting along with this im- pressive list of additional features: • Pre-ignition interlock input (proof-of-closure switch) • Selectable intermittent or interrupted pilot valve function (with 10 second MFEP) • LED fault code (Blinkum) annunciation on safety shutdown (20 possible codes) • Selectable pilot flame establishing period (PFEP) • Run/Test switch for interrupted pilot setup • Selectable relight or lockout action upon flame failure • Integral Valve Proving System (selectable to occur at 5 different times) Learn more about what Valve Proving is and why it’s desirable in the related article. The RM7840G1022, RM7840L1075 and RM7800L1087 offer programmer con- trol for automatically fired gas, oil, or combination fuel single power burner appli- cation where pre-purge and proof of closure are needed. All three models have these standard features: • Integral Valve Proving System (selectable to occur at 5 different times) • Programmable post purge (between 0-600 seconds or 10-60 minutes) • Shutter drive output for dynamic self-checking UV flame detectors • Pre-ignition interlock input (proof-of-closure switch) In addition, the RM7840G has modulated low fire proven purge, fault code annun- ciation via power LED (20 possible codes) and selectable pilot flame establish- ing period (PFEP) with selectable intermittent/interrupted pilot valve. Continued on page 3. WHAT IS VALVE PROVING? Why Would You Want It? Simply put, a self-checking valve proving sys- tem (VPS) provides an automatic means of test- ing valve seat integrity effectively verifying the closure of automatic safety shut-off valves. When a failing valve is detected, the VPS will go into automatic lockout status, preventing burner start-up and generating an alarm. The test oc- curs each burner cycle during pre-purge, post purge and/or standby, depending on the control and the user selected interval schedule. VPS positively impacts: • Safety – avoids a potentially unsafe condi- tion by testing and identifying failing valves during each burner cycle. • Energy cost – saves natural gas costs from leaky or stuck-open vent valves during burner firing. • Reduces emissions – reduces natural gas escaping from leaky or stuck-open vent valves during burner firing. • Installation costs – eliminates installation and maintenance costs associated with vent valves and piping from a traditional double block and bleed system (where regulations permit). This is why you want VPS! By the way, Honeywell’s VPS is designed to detect a leak greater than 0.1% of the burner input capacity. ¡ www.climaticcontrol.com ControLinks Linkageless Fuel-Air Control System As the high (and rising) cost of energy continues its relentless squeeze, businesses and institutions are looking for significant ways to conserve. Aren’t we all? One of those major impact areas is right at the source – the com- bustion source that is, and the burner specifically. Traditionally designed with single-point mechanical cams and linkage assem- blies, the power burner is what controls the relationship between fuel, airflow, and flue gas recirculation (if used). Inevitably, slop in these key control linkages occurs over time and the results cost really money and time in fuel efficiency, short cycling, burner turn- down, and equipment wear-and-tear. Honeywell’s ControLinks puts and end to the inefficiencies of link- age systems by providing linkageless, microprocessor-based fuel/ air control. Using ControLinks, the fuel/air ratio to a burner can be adjusted independently, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and maximized burner efficiency that typically pays for itself within a year. All it takes is one controller, four actuators, and optimal burner efficiency for significant savings. If a picture is worth 1000 words, try this one, featuring a typical boiler application with Con- troLinks on for size! The top 10 reasons to go linkageless with ControLinks: #10 It’s easy-to-use. Install, setup, and tune-ups are straightforward. #9 It’s affordable. Payback is typically less than one year (versus the expense of 02 trim). #8 It’s safe. Safe operation is assured with built-in, dynamic safety checks. #7 It’s reliable. No Fuel/Air profile erosion over time due to component wear and shifting. #6 It’s flexible. Duel fuel flexibility allows two independent fuel curves (also maximizes efficiency for both fuels). #5 It’s accurate. More precise firing rate control obtained over the entire burner firing rate for both fuels. #4 It’s “green.” Reduces Thermal NOx emissions up to 60% and reduces excess air. #3 It’s effective. Fuel usage is reduced from 2% to 6% (and beyond) for both fuels by replacing old mechanical single point linkage systems. #2 It’s efficient. Fuel efficiency increases by utilizing different light off and low fire points. #1 And the #1 reason is: It saves energy. It prevents burner short cycling, lowers stack temperatures, reduces fuel consumption, and increases combustion efficiency.
