District Conference Forum #2 Chip Doyle, Oakland Rotary #3 Rotary Means Business One of the most effective methods I’ve used to build my business while simultaneously supporting my club (Oakland #3) was to promote an informational seminar related to my business (teaching professionals to sell without sounding like a salesperson) in support of the Saroni-Lena Scholarship fund. This unique scholarship program provides financial support to special high school students in Oakland that may not be at the absolute top of their class but still have all the necessary ingredients to be successful in college except for their family’s financial capability to pay. We promoted the seminar in July 2005 as a not-for- profit event for the benefit of this scholarship fund and my business absorbed the marketing costs. In turn, I donated all of the gross proceeds from the event to the scholarship fund. I’ve done many informational seminars in the past but I was pleasantly surprised with the response I received from this particular invitation. The seminar actually sold out and I was able to donate more than $2000 to the scholarship fund. But even from a business standpoint, this event was clearly successful. A handful of the attendees decided they should retain me for additional work. I must admit that because the event supported a worthwhile cause, response and attendance was far better than previous seminars. Additionally, I was able to proudly and openly promote this event within my club because it supported an important project for my Rotary Club. After brief panel presentations from members who have been in Rotary 1 to 3 years, the session participants will engage in small group, interactive exercises to share what has worked in terms of their own involvement and to generate new and innovative ideas for engaging new members. All of the information gathered will be compiled and shared with all clubs via the District Newsletter. We want to hear from you! Accept our invitation and sign up today! District 5170 Newsletter Issue 10 • April 2006 www.rotary5170.org Page 7 of 17 District Conference Forum #5 Donn Wadley, Rotaract Chair The Connecting Bridge We all recognize the value and the importance of constantly renewing the membership of our Rotary clubs. The main ingredient in a healthy Rotary organization is the members. We are all being reminded by our membership chairs, and articles in the Rotarian magazine, to bring our friends and colleagues into the fellowship of Rotary. We have an entire organization in place at our District Staff level specifically for the purpose of membership development, membership reporting, membership retention, new member orientation/information, plus an added cadre of ten (10) membership area representatives; a team of 14 Rotarians to work with individual Club Membership Committees to provide them with resources, leadership and ideas on how to increase membership. WOW! All of this man/women power certainly indicates that membership is essential to the continuation of Rotary, world-wide! Forum 5, entitled "The Connecting Bridge", features ten NEW ROTARIANS. From one of the largest Rotary youth programs in the world, the growth of new Rotaract clubs in our district from zero just a little over two years ago to an active roster of 5 clubs representing over 400 young adults, ages 18 through 30, poses an outstanding resource for renewing the membership of Rotary in our district. Attendance at this Forum will introduce you to these NEW ROTARIANS. Join with them in describing the future of Rotary as carried out through our young adults and their Rotaract programs, projects and activities. This forum, held on Saturday, April 29th at 10:50 a.m., will "bring youth back into your life and that of your club". District Conference Forum #6 Barbara Render, Youth Service Chair Tomorrow’s Leaders Today Don’t miss an opportunity to meet our next generation of leaders. Visit with students from all over the world and hear how their Youth Exchange experience has broadened their knowledge and perception of the world. Meet also, District 5170’s Interactors and learn about the many projects they are currently sponsoring. You will be impressed with the next generation of miracle-workers. The many youth activities sponsored by Rotary have provided our youth with great opportunities to develop leadership skills as well as promote the importance of “Service Above Self”. You will have an opportunity to dialogue with the students and ask the questions you have wanted answered about their motivation, commitment, and future plans. District Conference Forum #8 Linda Ricketts, D5170 Foundation Alumni Chair Crossing Cultures You are cordially invited to come and witness your foundation dollars at work! Under the leadership of Governor Arlene Greenberg, and the Foundation Chairwoman, Carolyn Schuetz, the District 5170 Scholarship Committee proudly presents a glimpse into the future through the eyes and experiences of your very own Ambassadorial Scholars and Alumni. After having taken a short break from conference activities last year, the district 5170 Scholarship Committee will host the Scholars Forum this year on April 29th. This forum continues to be a conference favorite showcasing the best and brightest from many countries throughout the world - our inbound and outbound scholars. This year’s program will include cross-cultural presentations by current scholars, interactive panel discussions, and a special presentation to some of our most accomplished alumni. Be sure to visit the Scholar’s Booth in the House of Friendship for a first-hand look at an award winning display. Then come and share in the exciting stories of where the scholars have been . . . where they are going . . . where they are coming from . . . and how they have used the Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship to advance the reach of humanitarian service here in the United States and around the world. Come early!!! This forum always fills up fast. Event Speaker Spotlight Maj. L. Tammy Duckworth A Rotary Hero Tammy helped District 5170’s effort to return Rotary to Afghanistan when she worked for Rotary International. She was called to active duty in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. In November, 2004, her aircraft was hit, costing her both legs and shattered an arm. With incredible optimism, Tammy has rebounded and is now running for Illinois’ Sixth District U.S. Congressional seat. Tammy will be the speaker during the lunch on Friday, April 28th at 12:00 p.m. Plan on attending this motivational and inspirational talk – reserve your seat online at www.rotary5170.org District 5170 Newsletter Issue 10 • April 2006 www.rotary5170.org Page 9 of 17 Celebrating Sweet Success Mary Caldwell, D5170 Area 2 Assistant Governor Area 2 has a Sweet Tooth It will be a sweet occasion when Rotary friends visit the Area Two Hospitality Sweet (Suite). In recognition of District Governor Arlene Greenberg's sweet beginnings and continued sweet success, Rotarians from Castro Valley, Castro Valley Sunrise, Hayward South, Hayward, Hayward Sunset, San Lorenzo and San Leandro Rotary Clubs will greet you and your guests in a room filled with chocolate. As you approach the two chocolate fountains, you will be met with the aroma of warm chocolate. Then as you dip delicious items into the warm, flowing brown liquid chocolate, you will socialize with your old Rotary friends and new Rotary acquaintances. It will be difficult for you to leave the fountain area; but when you do, you will be tempted by the chocolate liquid concoctions created by the friendly Hayward Rotary folks at their chocolate lounge: Chocolate martinis and mudslides. When you finally do leave the Area Two Sweet, you will be given a chocolate covered mint to enjoy later in the evening as you recall your wonderful day spent at the District 5170 Rotary Conference. Come Play with Us Rich Bennet, D5170 Area 4 Assistant Governor It Just May Change Your Life I joined Rotary on March 29, 1995 and in less then a month I attended to my first District conference with my wife. The first thing we attended was the Hospitality Suites on Saturday night and then we went to the Dinner afterwards. The speaker was Ed Futa, who is now the General Secretary of Rotary International. It was at the Red Lion in San Jose, now it is called the Doubletree. I met my club president there, Ed Coats, and he took us around. He introduced us to someone called a District Governor. He was a little short man, who was a little over weight with white hair. If he had a beard, he would look like Santa Claus. Since then we have become good friends. As I think about it, it seems like it just happened yesterday. I remember that night so clearly and we have been to every District Conference since then. You may be wondering why I am telling you about this. It is because this was my first time at a Rotary event outside my club. This is when I saw what Rotary really was and I wanted to be a part of it. In less then 4 months after that night, I was on a plane to the island of Saint Vincent, representing my club as a guest of the Saint Vincent Rotary Club. Since then Rotary has been a major part of my life and many of you know the rest of the story. So why attend the Hospitality Suites at the District Conference? Because you find out what Rotary is. The fellowship and fun we have as Rotarians. What we do in Rotary. Some of the places we go around the world in Rotary. How we as Rotarians change the world. There are not too many places you can go and eat, drink, and have fun with around 4 to 5 hundred people just like you. I have always said if you want to find out who people really are, just go out and play with them. And there is no better way to do that then at the Hospitality Suites. You never know - it just may change your life. There will be something to appeal to everyone – whether you are a sports enthusiast, flag-waving American, or just like to cheer on the underdog. This is one hospitality suite that you will not want to miss! Rotary and Area 6 are doing their best to make sure “Miracles happen . . . because we care.” Come and see how the Morgan Hill, Gilroy, San Juan Bautista, and Hollister Rotary Clubs have teamed up to make miracles happen in our community. Studio 5170 Cabaret John Giovani, D5170 Area 8 Assistant Governor Area 8 Presents Its Stars Area 8 is proud to present four outstanding talent acts at the Studio 5170 Cabaret on Friday night at the District Conference: THE GRATEFUL DADS (Folk Trio) CUPERTINO ROTARY THE GINGER TAYLOR MCDONALD TAP DANCERS LOS GATOS MORNING ROTARY DAN & LORRAINE LAWSON (Romantic Dance) LOS GATOS MORNING ROTARY COMEDIAN ROY DUNN CUPERTINO ROTARY Food, Fun, Frolic & Fellowship Don Mackenzie, D5170 Area 10 Assistant Governor Come One, Come All… to the Area 10 Hospitality Suite Area Ten would like you all to come to their most outstanding Hospitality Suite on Friday April 28th. You never quite know what you might find there. Will there be frozen margaritas and munchables? Most certainly. Come help yourself to our potables while rubbing shoulders with our notables. We feature Rotarians from such outstanding clubs as feisty East Palo Alto Bayshore, musical Mountain View, loving Los Altos, partying Los Altos Sunset, persuasive Palo Alto and the uppity University Club. Might there be the largest congregation of kilted Distinct Rotarians? It has been known to happen. The four “F’s”: Food, Fun, Frolic and Fellowship are the watchwords for the evening. As home to many of the craziest Rotarians in the District, Area 10 has decided to adopt the lampshade as our new lapel pin. We will be teaching sword swallowing for fun and profit. We will be having a “Name That District Governor” contest using only pictures of the soles of their shoes. We will be releasing our new single “Rotatin’ Roustabouts”. We will be reciting “The Four-Way Test” in Latin. If you have never experienced a Hospitality Suite before, this will certainly be one. You will be amazed that so much sheer pleasure and excitement can be stuffed into one hotel room. Don’t just stroll, but run, run to the Area Ten Hospitality suite before the management starts to get complains and we have to tone it down. We look forward to seeing you there. Send check (payable to Rotary District 5170) and reservation form to: Linda Ricketts (510) 701-9747 District 5170 Peace Fellows Chair 2101 Shoreline Drive Alameda, CA 94501 Membership Mike Wallace, D5170 Membership Chair Getting New Members Into the Flow So much of our emphasis seems to be on recruiting new members that we sometimes may not pay enough attention to keeping them in the club once they join. Tending carefully to two matters — orientation and early involvement — can make a big difference in the retention of new members. A good orientation session — in which the club president, the proposed member’s sponsor, and other key club members as needed take part — ensures that people know what they’re getting into. Subjects covered should include what Rotary is and does, what the local club does and how it operates, and what financial and time commitments are expected of Rotary club members. The session should be structured so there is ample time and opportunity for the prospective member to ask questions. And, once it becomes clear that the person wants to join and make the commitment, the session can be a good place for determining interests (community, vocational, international) and arranging to get him or her involved in that aspect of the club’s activities. It’s important to get new members involved in the club early. Even something as simple as asking the new member to collect fines or lead the Pledge of Allegiance can make the person feel welcome and part of the group. Or, designate a club member as a mentor whose is supposed to take the new member under their wing and help them get acclimated. As quickly as possible, a club should get a new member involved in more serious service work, according to his or her inclinations. When it comes to keeping people in Rotary, nothing does the trick like active participation in a touch- your-heart project. D5170 Leads the World PDG Carolyn Schuetz, General Chair, D5170 Rotary Foundation Committee Rankings for Rotary Foundation Giving Congratulations to the Rotarians of District 5170 for their generous support of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International! In the data reported for July 1, 2005, through January 31, 2006, our District showed fantastic success. Out of the 529 Districts in the World of Rotary International, D5170 currently ranks: #1 District 5170 for Annual Programs Fund (Annual Giving). This is perhaps the most important statistic because this is the category of giving that results in District Designated Funds returning to our District in three years. #7 District 5170 for Total Giving to The Rotary Foundation #10 District 5170 for Restricted Giving to The Rotary Foundation (primarily our contributions to Matching Grants and PolioPlus) #32 District 5170 for contributions to The Permanent Fund We should be very proud of this performance so far in the 2005-06 Rotary Year. We are playing a key role in Rotary’s efforts toward world understanding and peace. However, we should not relax our efforts! There are still Rotarians in the District who have not yet made any contribution to The Rotary Foundation this year. Let’s reach out to those individuals and remind them of our goal of Every Rotarian Every Year! Other districts are still contributing, so we need to make sure that we do not lose our place in the rankings. As Jonas Salk said, “The greatest reward for doing good is the opportunity to do more.” Event Speaker Spotlight Nicky Stone 1998 Olympic Gold Medalist At the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, Nikki Stone became America’s first-ever Olympic Champion in the sport of inverted aerial skiing. What made this performance so unbelievable was the fact that less than two years earlier, a chronic injury prevented Nikki from standing, much less walking or skiing off a 12-foot wall of snow that launches aerialists 5 stories into the air. Nicky will be the speaker during breakfast on Saturday, April 29th at 8:00 p.m. Plan on attending this motivational and inspirational talk – reserve your seat online at www.rotary5170.org District 5170 Newsletter Issue 10 • April 2006 www.rotary5170.org Page 13 of 17 RI Foundation Contributors Double Sustainers Thank you to the following individuals for their generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation since March 1, 2006: CUPERTINO Richard K.
